Unter dem Titel Interpretieren, arrangieren, Beziehungen stiften – Neue Rollenmodelle und Theorien im Kulturmanagement arbeiten VertreterInnen aus Kunst und Kulturmanagement, Kulturarbeit und angewandter Kulturwissenschaft an einem neuen Selbstverständnis des Fachs Kulturmanagement. Im Anschluss an die beiden ersten Fachtagungen „Kulturmanagement: Bestandsaufnahme und Perspektiven“ (Rendsburg, 2006) und „Forschungsansätze und -methoden im Kulturmanagement“ (Universität Hildesheim, 2008) wird die dritte Arbeitstagung des deutschsprachigen Fachverbandes am 16.-17. Januar 2009 an der Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen den Diskurs zur Entwicklung eines facheigenen methodischen und theoretischen Rahmens weiterführen.

Communication Design Failures: Function & interpretation scrutinized

A professor of perceptual psychology remarked that it was a pity that there was no journal of negative results or failures in experimentation. Without such a journal we continue to go down blind alleys and make avoidable mistakes. Because communication design encompasses so many variables, to say nothing of the problem of interpretation or communication reception, in a loose similarity, design projects are not unlike experiments. Yet like perceptual psychology and other social science disciplines, discussion of failure is rare. Even less than social science
whose research questions form grounding for experimentation, design practice is pragmatic and designers quickly move to the next project with little reflection on degree of success or reasons for failure. Communication design, whether print, screen-based or other media rarely publishes any reflection on projects, but relies on celebratory awards and professional presentations with little critical examination.

The aphorism we learn most from our mistakes is at play in this special issue. Visible Language invites academics, authors, design practitioners and frustrated users who have observed failure in their contact with communication design in its many guises, whether as a designer or as a user, to document and analyze failures. Don’t be timid-share your failure or that of another-be critical and analytical and develop positive criticism that might lead to new insights or even a remedy.

20-29 August 2010: 16th International Symposium on Electronic Art – ISEA2010 announced

The ISEA Foundation Board is pleased to announce that Medienwerk NRW, Germany will host ISEA2010 as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.

Medienwerk NRW is a consortium from the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany including currently 16 institutions working in different areas of media culture: Music, Performance/Dance, Art, Research, Education and Digital Heritage.

HMKV which acts as the branch office of Medienwerk NRW will organise the conference in cooperation with ISEA2010′s artistic director Dr Andreas Broeckmann in Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg and other cities of the Ruhrgebiet between August 20 and 29, 2010 – integrated into a month of media arts within the RUHR.2010.

The programme will include conferences, exhibitions, audio-visual and dance performances, projects in public space, artist presentations, workshops, an E-Culture Fair and Artists-in-Labs-programme. (more…)

The 16th International Conference of the Society for Philosophy and Technology; University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, invites abstracts for high quality papers and panel proposals in all areas of philosophy of technology.

Given the focus of this year’s conference, papers dealing with converging technologies and their social and cultural impact are especially welcomed. SPT 2009 will include 15 tracks, including the track:

Philosophy of engineering and design (chair: Pieter Vermaas)

Answering the fundamental questions of philosophy of technology has continuously led to analyses of the very sources of technology. The ‘engineering and design’ track is open for contributions that address issues about these sources, and also welcomes contributions that link these issues to topics in other domains of philosophy and philosophy of technology. From conceptual analysis and the metaphysics of artifacts, to
arguments about the natural-artificial divide and socio-technical systems; from discussions of design methodology to analyses of heuristics, the nature of technical knowledge, and the preconditions to value-sensitive designing; from characterizations of engineering to theories of the interplay
between engineers, clients, users, and society, and evolutionary accounts of technology.

Deadline for abstracts (500 to 750 words): January 5, 2009.

“Internet for Image Searching” is a new, free-to- use online tutorial to assist staff and students within the education sphere in locating images for use in both teaching and learning.

The emphasis of the tutorial is on finding copyright cleared images which are available free; facilitating quick, hassle-free access to a vast range of online photographs and other visual resources.

Sharon Waller from the HEA/JISC Collaboration commented on the new tutorial saying “This tutorial is an excellent resource for anyone needing to know more about where and how to find images online. The fact that it concentrates on copyright cleared images will make it even more valuable for busy learning and teaching professionals, researchers and students alike. It will also serve to inspire confidence in those needing to use images
from the web in their work.”

This tutorial has been created by TASI – the JISC Advisory Service for digital media () and Intute as part of the Intute: Virtual Training Suite (). The tutorial was funded and supported by the Higher Education Academy / JISC Collaboration Initiative.

Wir möchten Sie am Dienstag, den 28. Oktober 2008, um 19 Uhr herzlich in die Kunsthalle Basel zur Vernissage des INSERT III von Davide Cascio einladen.

Davide Cascio (*1976, Lugano, Schweiz) präsentiert im Rahmen der Gruppenausstellung ROOMS LOOK BACK in der Kunsthalle Basel eine Reihe von Werken, die sich zu komplexen Denkmodellen verbinden. Mittels einer einfachen Holzkonstruktion wird der Übergang von einem Ausstellungsraum in den anderen zu einer Zeitreise, an deren Ende zwei Buchstaben die Utopien der Moderne befragen. Ausgehend von Le Corbusiers Esprit Nouveau (EN) – Zeitschrift und Name des Ausstellungspavillons für die Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1925, rekonstruiert 1977 in Bologna) – umkreist der Künstler Architektur in ihrer historischen und sozialen Bedeutung als “Behausung”. Die Motive, welche Cascio in einer Wandarbeit, einer Collage und einer Skulptur integriert, nehmen neben der funktionalistischen Bauweise Bezüge zur Minimal Art, zu geometrischen Formen in der Natur oder zur alternativen Lebensform Thoreaus (Walden, 1854) auf. Cascios Vorgehen könnte man mit demjenigen eines Wissenschafters während eines Laborexperiments vergleichen: bestehende Strukturen werden überdacht und deren Elemente so lange neu in Beziehung gesetzt und erweitert, bis sich andere mögliche Formen herauskristallisieren. Die Choreographin und Performerin Alexandra Bachzetsis (*1974, Zürich) präsentiert ihre erste grosse institutionelle Ausstellung in Form einer Reihe von Performances, die in der Kunsthalle Basel gezeigt werden. Bachzetsis’ Ausstellung sowie auch die Proben zu den Performances werden während den regulären Öffnungszeiten der Kunsthalle zugänglich sein. Folgende Performances finden statt:
