The seventh annual ID-IIT Design Research Conference (DRC) will be held September 19-20, 2008 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The conference is a collaborative forum exploring newly emerging topics, methods and issues in design research from a wide spectrum of disciplines. DRC is an ideal event for designers, consultants, planners, consumer researchers, educators and executives interested in the latest advanced methods and approaches to human-centered design research.

In 2008, the conference builds on a tradition of successful student-run conferences, bringing speakers with international perspectives, new methods and forward-thinking views, while at the same time facilitating even more discussion through workshops and discussion roundtables. Early registration will open at the end of May.

Design Connexity
As the trend towards globalisation continues there is a growing connectedness between all our actions and a growing interdependence between the social, economic and the environmental. This increasing connectedness raises new moral and ethical issues and challenges. This concept has been termed ‘connexity’ (Mulgan, 1998) and provides the title for the conference and the backdrop for the themes of the EAD 08 Conference, which seeks to explore the implications of these trends for design research and practice.

“Werkzeuge für Ideen – die Skizze”

Christian Gänshirt ist Autor des neulich erschienenen Buchs “Werkzeuge für Ideen”. Er geht von der Metapher “Werkzeuge des Entwerfens” aus und untersucht die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Entwerfenden, den ihnen zur Verfügung stehenden “Werkzeugen” und deren Bezug zu entwurflichen Vorstellungen.

Das Institut Design- und Kunstforschung konnte Christian Gänshirt für den Jour Fixe vom 2. Juni gewinnen. Er war Referent am Bird Design Research Symposium und stellte dort die Grundthesen seines Buches vor. In seinem Vortrag zum Jour Fixe wird er diese Gedanken weiter ausführen und besonders auf das Thema “Die Skizze als Werkzeug des Entwerfens” eingehen. Im Anschluss an den Vortrag steht er für weiterführende Fragen zur Verfügung.

Die aktuelle Nummer der Zeitschrift tec21 (Zeitschrift des SIA) widmet sich dem Thema “Film und Architektur” und stellt unter dem Titel “Architektur filmisch animiert” die Resultate des Dore-Forschungsprojekts (DoRe: Do Research, Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF) “Compositing Spaces – Regieanweisungen an die virtuelle Kamera” vor. Leading House des Projekts war das Institut Design- und Kunstforschung der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst FHNW.
