Das Institut Design- und Kunstforschung (IDK) am Standort Basel ist mit einem Konferenzbeitrag zum Forschungsprojekt „lifeClipper2“ durch Nadine Felix, Jan Torpus und Martin Wiedmer an der diesjährigen “Design Research Society Conference” in Sheffield vertreten.

IDK at the DRS 2008 Conference (16th – 19th July 2008)
The DRS conference is the biennial conference of the Design Research Society. The theme of this year’s conference is „Undisciplined! – Rigour in emerging design disciplines and professions“. The conference is an opportunity for researchers to share their new inquiries. It is open to any contribution that informs designing and any knowledge about the wider world that flows from the work of designers.
Based on the extended abstract, the authors Nadine Felix, Jan Torpus and Martin Wiedmer are invited to submit their full paper entitled “Negotiating Reality: Augmented Reality Design between Action and Reflection” for review. The paper is a reflection on the ideas and methods applied in the research project “lifeClipper2”. Our understanding of research through design is exemplified by a close examination of the methods used in this project. Further, the impacts of Augmented Reality on our understanding of what is real are explored.

“ISEA, the International Symposium on Electronic Art“ initiated in 1988, is the world’s premier media arts event for the critical discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in interactive and digital media. Held biannually in various cities throughout the world, this migratory event is being held in Asia for the second time in its history, after Singapore successfully secured this bid.”

The research project „living-room2 – experience your habitat!“ will be presented in the category „Reality Jam“.
While the reality effects of photography had forced a re-evaluation of the conventions and concerns of painting as well as of perception in the mid 19th century, the realistic aspirations of recent visualization and experiential technologies (e.g., in animation, gaming, immersive environments, mixed / augmented reality) are forcing us to reconsider our registers of the ‘real’ in our media and our everyday lives.
The confusing of the real and the virtual through seamless transitions and the perpetual obfuscation of the edges that demarcate them are increasingly the focus of scientific research as well as of creative works. The improvisational nature and interference potential of such ‘reality jamming’ – i.e., this pressing together of the real and virtual in a context where their distinctions are deliberately obscured – open further possibilities for research, scholarship and creative production.

„living-room2 – experience your habitat!“ explores different realities resulting from Augmented Reality (AR). As seen in most commercial uses, AR extends physical reality with Virtual Reality, uniting physical and virtual spaces. ‘Living-room2’s specific approach towards AR is its immersive application: the room dynamically negotiates between ‘real’ and ‘virtual’. In ‘Living-room2’, the space itself has become the object of transformation. The project proposes an extended space, a hybrid between a dynamic environment, an immersive movie and ‘interactive wallpaper’. As an expanded cinematic space, ‘living-room2’ reflects upon a possible future domestic culture of escapism and consumerism.

25 schwule Profikicker müsste es in der Österreichischen Bundesliga geben, wenn man annimmt, dass von 500 Profispielern wie in der Gesamtbevölkerung fünf Prozent homosexuell sind. Es gibt aber keinen einzigen schwulen Profispieler in Österreich, der offen mit seiner Homosexualität umgeht.

Fußball ist der letzte Ort, an dem die Klischees von „wahrer Männlichkeit“ gelebt werden können, sowohl auf dem Feld, als auch in den Fankurven. Schlechtes Spiel gilt als „weibliche“ Wesensart. Und weiblich codiertes Verhalten ist nicht willkommen, wird abgewertet und ausgegrenzt, was in Sexismus und Homophobie mündet. Zögerliche oder schlechte Fußballer werden als „Mädchen“ oder „Schwuchtel“ bezeichnet und der gegnerische Spieler als „warme Sau“ beschimpft. Defensives Spiel endet häufig in einem „warmen Pass“. Nicht nur in den österreichischen Stadien gehört blanker Machismo zum guten Ton. (more…)

DeSForM 2008

The 4th European Workshop on Design & Semantics of Form & Movement

On november 6 & 7 the next DeSForM workshop will take place at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main/Germany. The actual debate about Design & Research shows that there is a need for more and detailed knowledge about the disciplinary aspects of Design. Inter-, trans- and even multidisciplinary discourses are necessary, because today Design is at the same eye level as other scientific disciplines. But Design today has its own objects, goals and methods. We are looking for contribution (papers, posters, projects, products) which can give progress to this movement

Product Semantics and Product Language are fundamental for Design as a discipline. The HfG Offenbach, as an important centre of product language, is looking forward to hosting the next DeSForM workshop. Since the 1970´s knowledge about Design has been developed continuously – the „Theory of Product Language“ is widely recognized as an important disciplinary kernel of Product Design and Design Research.
