CARTE ROUGE – Wenn Mode errötet

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

THE 2008 DESIGN RESEARCH SOCIETY CONFERENCE

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

will be held in Sheffield, UK on 16-19 July 2008. The call for
papers will be announced on 1st September.

In the tradition of our biennial conference series this will be a broad-ranging event open to all topics and disciplines relevant to designing. However we will have a conference theme which will inform the choice of keynote speakers and, we hope, stimulate debate:

UNDISCIPLINED! Rigour in emerging design disciplines and professions.

You can find out more at the conference website at

If you are considering proposing a paper please join the conference announcement mail list at

2 September 2007: IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

A graphic design research symposium

The symposium has two main aims:

(a) to demystify the process of embarking on a research degree;

(b) to encourage Doctoral research in graphic design, and its related subject areas.

The event will reveal different approaches to research in graphic design, and feature three case studies by researchers at the point of completing their PhD. As well as reflecting on their experience, they will discuss a range of academic and non-academic issues, offering the opportunity to talk informally about concerns such as: funding; locating research study; part-time versus full-time; the balance between theory and practice; the demands on personal and professional life. Open Access: Der SNF erlässt Weisung für die Umsetzung

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

visual:design:scholarship Special Issue Call for Papers, 2007

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Topic: Graduate Education and the Design Industries

Guest Editor: Dr Laurene Vaughan, School of Applied Communication, RMIT University

Once upon a time we learnt on the job, through situated practice, then came diplomas, certificates and then degrees and higher degrees. Design education is an ever evolving beast that through every stage of development has brought with it concerns about the separation between the theory, the practice and the every day application of knowledge.

This Special Issue of visual:design:scholarship : Research Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association, invites your contribution to the exploration and evaluation of the potential relationships between graduate design education, design research and the design professions.

The Impact of Large Scale Integrated Displays on Architecture and Urbanism.

Developments in display technology and building materials are leading to new forms of hybrid architecture that break away from existing conceptions of surface, structure, lighting and moving imagery. Light Emitting Diode (LED) displays integrated with the fabric of built structures allow prominent imagery to be integrated with the façade, even in direct sunlight. Although energy requirements are practical only when displays are used in less bright conditions, there remain significant consequences for the townscape and urban environment; cinematic topias as pervasive as Minority Report and Blade Runner have become technically feasible. 19-21 September 2007: Digital Thinking – EuropIA.11: Call for Participation – Montreal – Quebec – Canada

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Digital Thinking in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Archaeology, Urban Planning and Design : /Finding the Ways/ New digital cultures bring inevitable changes to our world and to the techniques, research methods and practices of design. The computer technology transforms slowly but surely the professions of environmental planning, architecture, archaeology and design. In recent years, we witness the emergence of digital methods using computer not only for facilitating technical tasks, but also to analyse project’s performance or amplify the creative thinking of designers. Educating the future professionals has become a real challenge due to the clash between fast developing technology and slower evolving new design thinking and values redefinition. Confronting multi-disciplinary theoretical, teaching and practice experiences at the Europia11, will help finding the ways to the future of design.
