Jahrestagung der SGKM

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

MAKING/CRAFTING/DESIGNING

PERSPECTIVES ON DESIGN AS A HUMAN ACTIVITY

Design Theory Symposium

10–12 February 2011

Akademie Schloss Solitude

Stuttgart, Germany

Humans are essentially makers of things. These material artifacts surround us, they form our environment, and even form part of us. It is no longer possible to ignore that the world we live in is not a given, but is made by us. Alongside this ealization, the world itself has become increasingly makeable, for example through genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology. As the resulting artifacts grow ever more complex, it has become crucial to understand the process and consequences of their production. These operations can essentially be understood as design processes. Within an extended notion of design almost all human activity is, to a significant degree, a design activity.

Through lectures and workshops, this symposium explores how an extended notion of design could be conceptualized and what the consequences for design as an academic fiscipline might be. (more…)

16-18 October 2008: GAZING INTO THE 21st CENTURY Second international conference on Image Science in Goettweig

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Never before has the world of images changed so fast and the way images are produced transformed so drastically as in recent times. Second Life, Micromovies, Flickr, Virtual Reality, YouTube, Visual Music, Scientific Visualisation, Google Earth etc. are keywords standing for a multitude of new possibilities for individual producing, projecting and distributing of visual material.

The images historical development between innovation, reflection and iconoclasm reaches a new level of global complexity in the 21st century.
These transformations have hit society to a large extent unprepared. Nevertheless we have to recognize that we will not be able to handle the
knowledge burst of our time without further development of new forms of visualization and orders of visibility.

What inspiration do these new worlds of images gain from art? What influence does the medium have on the iconic character of the image? What chances and challenges do image dealers and museums face with the liquidity of the image? (more…)

“Designed for co-designers” workshop

How to design and manage products, services and experiences that are to be
completed and built upon by users or customers? How can we design for
co-designers?

This full day workshop at the Participatory Design Conference 2008 will
bring together examples and studies of recent trends in user generated
content, open platforms for exchange of products, ideas and media, end user
customization and other open models for innovation.

We invite case studies, methods, stories and critical analysis on this topic
to generate a deeper understanding of its relevance to contemporary
participatory design. The discussion will focus on methods, challenges and
advantages for intentionally supporting end user innovation through design.

The workshop areas of interest includes (but are not limited
to):

(i) consumer products; (ii) user generated content and media;
(iii) social innovation in services, practices and processes

Swiss Design Network Symposium 2008

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

The Symposium 2008 of the Swiss Design Network (SDN) puts the «daily practice» of design research on its agenda.

Real-world design research projects illustrate questions, processes, methods and activities, with which they have been planned, approached, executed and evaluated. Projects are connected to various design disciplines, ranging from product design to interface design, visual communication and service design. In other words: projects are related to products, services, interfaces, information, communication and environments, or they focus on integrated systems of products, services and customer experiences.

Special attention will be given to specific design research related procedures that aim at generating insights and design knowledge.

Project results should put in perspective a useful repertoire of tools that help plan and accomplish design research projects – from formulating research question up to evaluating research results.

Papers, disputes and workshops are the means by which the SDN symposium 2008 intends to contribute to the further development of design research.

IDK an der DRS-Konferenz in Sheffield

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Das Institut Design- und Kunstforschung (IDK) am Standort Basel ist mit einem Konferenzbeitrag zum Forschungsprojekt „lifeClipper2“ durch Nadine Felix, Jan Torpus und Martin Wiedmer an der diesjährigen “Design Research Society Conference” in Sheffield vertreten.

IDK at the DRS 2008 Conference (16th – 19th July 2008)
The DRS conference is the biennial conference of the Design Research Society. The theme of this year’s conference is „Undisciplined! – Rigour in emerging design disciplines and professions“. The conference is an opportunity for researchers to share their new inquiries. It is open to any contribution that informs designing and any knowledge about the wider world that flows from the work of designers.
Based on the extended abstract, the authors Nadine Felix, Jan Torpus and Martin Wiedmer are invited to submit their full paper entitled “Negotiating Reality: Augmented Reality Design between Action and Reflection” for review. The paper is a reflection on the ideas and methods applied in the research project “lifeClipper2”. Our understanding of research through design is exemplified by a close examination of the methods used in this project. Further, the impacts of Augmented Reality on our understanding of what is real are explored.

IDK an der ISEA2008 in Singapur

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

IDK at the ISEA2008 (25th July to August 3rd 2008)
“ISEA, the International Symposium on Electronic Art“ initiated in 1988, is the world’s premier media arts event for the critical discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in interactive and digital media. Held biannually in various cities throughout the world, this migratory event is being held in Asia for the second time in its history, after Singapore successfully secured this bid.”

The research project „living-room2 – experience your habitat!“ will be presented in the category „Reality Jam“.
While the reality effects of photography had forced a re-evaluation of the conventions and concerns of painting as well as of perception in the mid 19th century, the realistic aspirations of recent visualization and experiential technologies (e.g., in animation, gaming, immersive environments, mixed / augmented reality) are forcing us to reconsider our registers of the ‘real’ in our media and our everyday lives.
The confusing of the real and the virtual through seamless transitions and the perpetual obfuscation of the edges that demarcate them are increasingly the focus of scientific research as well as of creative works. The improvisational nature and interference potential of such ‘reality jamming’ – i.e., this pressing together of the real and virtual in a context where their distinctions are deliberately obscured – open further possibilities for research, scholarship and creative production.

„living-room2 – experience your habitat!“ explores different realities resulting from Augmented Reality (AR). As seen in most commercial uses, AR extends physical reality with Virtual Reality, uniting physical and virtual spaces. ‘Living-room2’s specific approach towards AR is its immersive application: the room dynamically negotiates between ‘real’ and ‘virtual’. In ‘Living-room2’, the space itself has become the object of transformation. The project proposes an extended space, a hybrid between a dynamic environment, an immersive movie and ‘interactive wallpaper’. As an expanded cinematic space, ‘living-room2’ reflects upon a possible future domestic culture of escapism and consumerism.
